Health Care

Announcements and News

"...the Catholic Church does not teach that government should directly provide health care...The proper role of the government is to regulate the private sector, in order to foster healthy competition and to curtail abuses. Therefore any legislation that undermines the viability of the private sector is suspect. Private, religious hospitals and nursing homes, in particular, should be protected, because these are the ones most vigorously offering actual health care to the poorest of the poor."

Manhattan Declaration

"A formidable coalition of 150 Catholic, Orthodox and evangelical leaders are calling on Christians in a new manifesto to reject secular authority – and even engage in civil disobedience – if laws force them to accept abortion, same-sex marriage and other ideas that betray their religious beliefs".

If you wish to sign the Declaration and/or encourage others to do so, the website is www.manhattandeclaration.org

Though the manifesto originated in the USA, it touches on global concerns and may be signed by individuals internationally.  Over 70,000 have already signed the Declaration and numbers are growing.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) Information
by American Life League
Released November 1, 2009

There is a lot of confusion surrounding the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, particularly regarding the organizations it funds through grants. American Life League and other organizations recently revealed that the CCHD has been giving money to organizations whose objectives and actions are in direct conflict with Catholic teaching. More to the point, ALL is conducting a "No Thank You!" campaign, asking Catholics to withhold donations from the CCHD because current CCHD grantees support:

  • Abortion
  • “Family planning” services
  • Birth control
  • “Comprehensive” sexuality education
  • Same-sex marriage
  • Decriminalized prostitution
  • Emergency contraception

Several people have notified us that they called their dioceses, receiving assurances that the CCHD had defunded all of the offending organizations. This is not true! In order to support this claim, many responses include copies of an October 2 memo sent to all other bishops by Bishop Roger Morin, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ chairman of the CCHD, regarding recent charges that the CCHD is funding radical organizations. Bishop Morin acknowledged that the CCHD defunded some of the groups and, after further investigation, found no fault with the rest. Read more...

Please print out the statement cards and share them with fellow Catholics. Tell the CCHD "No Thank You!" when the annual collection is taken in your parish on November 22.

ABSOLUTE OPPOSITION TO NATIONAL HEALTH CARE REFORM A MUST
Posted: Monday November 2, 2009 at 10:49 am EST by Judie Brown

A couple of recent news items from South America have reminded me once again why the United States government — or any government, for that matter — must never be entrusted with the health care of its population.  Political arrangements or authoritarian actions are always just the stroke of a pen away from oppression of religious liberty.

It is the rare country these days that can boast of a politician who actually stands up for truth, life and the ethics of honest government. When I first read of the actions of the president of the Constitutional Court of Peru, I was in total disbelief and had to immediately check sources to make sure that the news I had read was accurate. The president, Juan Vergara, has asked Peru’s minister of health, Oscar Ugarte, to prohibit the sale of the morning-after pill in pharmacies, due to the fact that the pill can cause an abortion.

This announcement came almost three years to the day after Chile’s feminist president, Michelle Bachelet, fought to liberalize the nation’s policies regarding the availability of contraception by making this very pill, the morning-after pill, available free at state-run hospitals.  Read more...

A Healthcare Problem Washington May Have Missed
Nov 6, 2009
Bishop James D. Conley

With more than 620 Catholic hospitals serving the public around the United States, hundreds of Catholic medical clinics and shelters, and even a few Catholic-affiliated medical schools, Catholics have a keen interest in healthcare reform. That interest isn’t new. It’s rooted in experience, including the experience of trying to help people with little or no health insurance at all. For decades, the U.S. bishops have pushed for an overhaul of our nation’s healthcare industry and the way it delivers its services. Why? Because the Church sees access to basic health care as a right and a social responsibility, not a privilege.

But Catholic support for the general principle of reform does not bind anyone to endorse a specific piece of legislation. God gave us brains for a reason, to think; and we need to use them, because the practical and moral problems we face on the way to good healthcare reform are as formidable as the goal is admirable. This is why the U.S. bishops’ conference has tried so diligently for the past three months to work with Congress and the White House in seeking sound compromise legislation. As of November 5, all those efforts have failed.

The bishops have a few simple but important priorities. Read more...
