Questions and Answers
Q: How can Plan B "not affect" a pregnancy and yet be an abortifacient?
A: The confusing issue for many is the medical definition of "pregnancy". Medically, pregnancy is the state created when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. So, if a drug prevents implantation, it does not affect a "pregnancy", since that has not occurred yet. If the egg has already implanted (medically, you are pregnant now), the Plan B pill has no action. This is the same with birth control pills; they work the same way each month, preventing pregnancy by aborting any embryos before implantation as a secondary effect. It is written on the package, though many don't realize they are also an abortifacent.
So, abortion can occur before a medical pregnancy does. The embryo begins when an egg is fertilized. No "pregnancy" yet, but there is a baby. This baby can be aborted by preventing implantation, and thereby preventing a "pregnancy".
